UW and Miami met in the 2009 Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando and the 24th-ranked Badgers pulled off a 20-14 victory over the 14th-ranked Hurricanes.
The temperature at kickoff was just 50, and it was clear early that UW’s players were more comfortable than the Hurricanes, many of whom wore long sleeves and huddled around heaters on the sideline.
Tailback John Clay rushed for 22 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns and Scott Tolzien completed 19 of 26 passes for 260 yards in the victory.
Clay was named MVP of the game but tight end Lance Kendricks was UW’s best player.
Kendricks, from Milwaukee King, threw crushing blocks on both of Clay’s touchdown runs and caught seven passes for 128 yards.
Five defenders recorded at least one tackle for loss as the Badgers finished with nine overall. O’Brien Schofield had two of UW’s five sacks.
The victory allowed UW to finish 10-3 and served as a catalyst for a Big Ten title run in 2010.
UW finished 7-1 in the Big Ten in 2010 to secure a share of its first league title since the ’99 season. It was the first of three consecutive league titles under Bret Bielema.
